Why Systematic Performance Tracking Beats Memory
Most presale investors dramatically overestimate their returns when asked how their IDO investments have performed. Memory retains wins prominently and minimizes losses — a consistent cognitive bias that leads to overconfidence, poor risk calibration, and repeated strategy errors. Building a systematic monthly IDO performance tracking system replaces subjective memory with objective data, revealing what is actually working in your presale approach and what is not.
What to Track: Core Portfolio Metrics
Per-Position Metrics
For each IDO or presale position, record:
- Project alias and platform
- Entry price and total invested (in USD equivalent at time of investment)
- TGE date and initial listing price
- Current price and current unrealized value
- Any realized exits: date, amount sold, price received
- Vesting schedule: current unlock percentage, next unlock date, remaining locked amount
Portfolio-Level Metrics
Aggregate across all positions monthly:
- Total deployed capital (all-time)
- Total realized gains/losses (exited positions)
- Current unrealized portfolio value
- Overall return-on-invested-capital (ROIC)
- Win/loss ratio by presale category (IEO vs IDO, sector, platform)
- Average holding period for exited positions
Building the Tracking System
Option 1: Spreadsheet (Most Flexible)
A simple Google Sheets or Excel tracker with columns for each metric above provides complete control. Link to CoinGecko APIs for automated price updates. The advantage: customizable to your exact presale categories and reporting needs.
Option 2: On-Chain Portfolio Trackers
DeBank (debank.com) and Zapper (zapper.xyz) automatically detect token holdings across all connected wallets and calculate current portfolio value. They do not automatically know your entry prices but can be used as the current-value component of a hybrid tracking system.
Option 3: Dedicated Portfolio Tools
CoinTracker and Koinly are primarily tax tools but provide portfolio performance tracking as a secondary feature. They can import transaction history from wallet addresses to reconstruct entry costs automatically.
Monthly Review Checklist
On the first of each month, run through:
- Update current prices for all active positions
- Record any vesting unlocks that occurred during the month
- Log any trades executed (entries and exits)
- Calculate monthly change in total portfolio value
- Review underperformers: is the investment thesis still valid or should you exit?
- Review outperformers: does the vesting schedule support holding further or should you take partial profits?
- Add next month's upcoming unlock events to your calendar
Token Unlocks at tokenunlocks.app provides upcoming unlock events for tracked projects. Portfolio tracking across on-chain positions is available at DeBank. For tax reporting on realized gains, Koinly supports presale token cost basis tracking.
Glossary
- ROIC (Return on Invested Capital):
- Total profit (realized + unrealized gains minus losses) divided by total capital deployed. The most accurate measure of overall presale investment performance.
- Unrealized Gain/Loss:
- The current profit or loss on a position that has not yet been sold. Becomes realized only when the position is closed.
